Industrial Waste Updated: Apr 5, 2022

The Environmental Protection Division of the Santa Fe Springs Fire Department permits and inspects industrial waste discharges within the City of Santa Fe Springs. The EPD also regulates industrial wastewater collected and hauled to a legal point of disposal. Los Angeles County Code, Title 20, Division 2 as adoted by Chapter 97 of the Santa Fe Springs City Code requires all facilities that generate and or dispose of industrial waste to obtain an Industrial Waste Disposal Permit (IWDP). IWPDs are subject to routine inspections and annual fees. If a violation is issued by one of our field inspectors, a full reply to the items requested must be submitted within the time alloted by the notice. If corrective action cannot be completed within the due date, the inspector who issued the notice must be contacted directly.

An IWDP is terminated when the person owning or operating the premises has filed a written request, and a field inspection has confirmed that all industrial wastewater producing operations have ceased. All pretreatment facilities must have been permanently removed or closed before a permit can be canceled. If the pretreatment facilities are to be maintained for future use, an open-unused permit must be obtained.

Industrial wastewater includes all wastewater from any producing, manufacturing, processing, institutional, commercial, agricultural, or other operation where the wastewater discharged includes significant quantities of wastes of non-human origin. All liquid wastes hauled by truck, rail, or another means for disposal to the sewer shall be considered as industrial wastewater regardless of the original source of the wastes.
