Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center
Renovation and Modernization Project Update

The renovation and modernization of the Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center is near completion.  The Center will open to Santa Fe Springs’ residents and the surrounding communities on January 7, 2013.

A re-dedication event was held on November 18, 2012 where City Council and numerous staff and consultants involved in the project performed the official ribbon cutting, and the Center was opened to the public for an initial preview of the redesigned facility.

Although the newly designed Center is contained within the parameters of the existing facility, many new improvements were incorporated in order to provide more efficient and effective programs and services to residents and the community at large. In particular, the new facility design includes a reception area in the south Lobby, an expanded north Lobby, a separate entrance for the onsite Food Pantry, a Children’s Healing Garden and the new William C. Gordon Learning Center. Patrons will find an updated and modern full Kitchen, a Catering Kitchen, and additional meeting rooms for small groups and organizations. The renovation also includes infrastructure improvements, including new electrical and lighting systems, new restroom plumbing and fixtures, new heating and air conditioning systems, new fire alarm and security systems, new landscaping and a new roof.

In addition to the new facility, Family and Human Services staff has been preparing to implement newly innovative programs and services for all ages which include embodying various cultural backgrounds, healthier lifestyles, and community involvement, one of which is the Santa Fe Springs Community Closet. The Community Closet is a program where residents can donate new or slightly worn clothes, school uniforms, and shoes to help those families having difficulty purchasing them.

Although the building renovation and schedule has been a lengthy process, the Santa Fe Springs City Council is confident that residents and patrons of the Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center will agree that it has been worth the wait. The City Council and facility staff invite you to come and see the new Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center on January 7, 2013.
