How do I find Zoning of my property?
You can find out the zoning of your property by calling the Planning Department. You can also view the zoning map online.  We still recommend that you call the Planning Department to verify if the information is correct and that no recent zone change has occurred on the property.

How close to the property line can I build?
Setback requirements vary depending on the property’s zoning and type of structure being built.  Contact the Planning Department to verify the zoning regulations and the development standards for your property. You can also view the City’s Zoning Regulations online.

How high can a fence be on my property?
Fence heights vary depending on the property’s zoning.  Contact the Planning Department to verify the height limitations and if any design restrictions apply to your property.

Can you tell me where my property lines are located?

Do I need Planning Department approval for the change I am proposing to my commercial/industrial?
In general, any change which may alter the site plan or changes/additions to the exterior of the building will require a review of the site plan, elevations and/or landscape plans by the Planning Department.  This includes, but is not limited to, building additions, changes to existing parking layout, generator or equipment placement on the ground, new structures, façade changes to the building, etc.  Please contact the Planning Department to determine if the changes proposed will require site plan approval and the appropriate process.

What is difference between Planning Department approval and a Building Permit?
Most improvements to property require BOTH a Planning Department approval and a Building Permit from the Building Department. The Planning Department approval focuses on the use/improvement appropriateness for the subject property based on the City's zoning regulations. The Building Permit review process focuses on the safety of the structure to ensure that the requirements of the current Building Code and other uniform codes such as Fire, Plumbing, and Electrical are met. Most building permits cannot be issued until planning approval for the proposed project is obtained.

Do I need a license or permit to run a business out of my house?
Yes, provided that you can comply with the requirements set forth in Section 155.635 of the City’s Zoning Regulations.  Please note that you will need to get both a Business License and a Home Occupation Permit.  Please contact Cecilia Pasos at (562) 868-0511 x7527 for information relating to a Business License and the Planning Department for information relating to a Home Occupation Permit and/or requirements identified in Section 155.635 of the City’s Zoning Regulations.

How do I apply for a vacant position?

You must submit a completed City of Santa Fe Springs employment application. We accept applications only for positions that are open for recruitment.

Employment Opportunities

How do I obtain a City of Santa Fe Springs employment application?
Applications are available from our website, by calling the Job Line at (562) 409-7600, or by visiting the City of Santa Fe Springs City Hall in person.

How do I file an Employment Application?
Applications must be filed within the filing deadline in person at City Hall or by mail. Mailed applications must be received by the Human Resources Office before the final filing date. Postmarks will not be accepted.

Most positions require a completed application form and a supplemental questionnaire, however attaching a resume is encouraged. Please DO NOT write "See Resume" on your application in lieu of completing the job history information.

What happens after I file my application?
The Human Resources Office will keep you informed during the testing process by mail. We will notify you if your application is accepted and when you are scheduled for any test or interview. Each application is given careful review and consideration. Typically, you will be notified of your application’s status within two to three weeks of the final filing date. Recruitments that generate a large interest may take longer to process.

What does "Open Until Filled" mean?

It means the position will close without notice once a sufficient number of applications have been received.

How often are jobs available?
The City opens recruitment for positions as needed. We accept applications only for positions that are open for recruitment. If you are interested in a position that is not open, you may complete a Job Interest Card in person, by phone or online. We keep all Job Interest Cards for up to twelve months. If we recruit for the position listed on your Job Interest Card, we will notify you by mail with the deadline to submit a City application.

You must submit a separate City Employment Application for each position. You may apply for as many positions as you wish, as long as the positions are currently open.

What should I do if my address or phone number changes?
Notify the Human Resources Office immediately, and we will make the changes to your records. If we are unable to contact you because you have moved or changed your phone number, your name may be withdrawn from further consideration.

Notify Human Resources of Address or Phone Number change

You may let us know by using our Online Service Request system. If you haven't used our Online Service Request system before, you will need to create an account to use this system. If you have any problems, please send us an e-mail at support@santafesprings.org.

How does Human Resources determine if I qualify for a position?

The Human Resources Office staff and the hiring department review all application materials submitted to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications and special requirements as stated on the job announcement. It is important to include not only paid work experience, but all experiences/certificates which may apply to the job, i.e., volunteer experience, licenses, professional affiliations, classes you have taken, training you have received and any other qualifications. Failure to include all information requested could result in the rejection of your application.

What is an Eligibility List?

An Eligibility List is established after recruitment has been conducted. The list contains applicants who have successfully completed the testing process. Usually, Eligibility Lists expire one year from the date the position closes; however, the City Manager may extend or expire the list early.

What are the steps of the recruitment selection process?
The steps of the testing process vary depending upon the position. For example, an application screening and oral interview may be all that is required. On the other hand, you may be invited to take a written exam, a performance test, such as typing or the operation of heavy equipment, and an oral interview. Decisions about the testing process are determined by Human Resources before the position opens for recruitment.

What if I am not selected or invited to interview?
Our objective is to hire the best person for the position. If you are not successful in getting a job immediately, your name will remain on the Eligibility List for consideration for any future vacancies that occur until the list expires. Do not be discouraged if you do not get a job offer the first time you apply. You may be contacted for future vacancies if you are on an eligibility list.

What happens after I complete an examination?
You will be notified of your test results as soon as possible, usually by mail within two to three weeks.

What should I do if I am contacted for an interview?
Preparation is very important. Don’t walk into the interview not knowing much about the position or the City of Santa Fe Springs. Be sure you know where and when to report, and the position you are being considered for. Make certain you are on time, or early for the interview. If you have applied for more than one position, be sure to obtain the name and telephone number of the person who contacted you for the interview, or save the letter if you were notified by mail, especially if you have applied for more than one position.

What if I need a reasonable accommodation for an examination and/or interview?

Please be sure to notify the Human Resources Office at least five days prior to the examination and/or interview date.

What will the interview be like?

Typically, the interview is conducted by an oral board with three panelists. The panelists may come from different departments, and/or outside agencies. During your interview, you will be asked several structured and situational questions to help the panelists understand your education and work experience as it relates to the position.

What happens after the interview?

You will be notified by mail about two weeks after your interview. If you pass, your name will be placed on the Eligibility List in alphabetical order. The Eligibility List is then sent to the Hiring Department, and they may contact you for a second interview. The Eligibility List for the job will remain in effect for a specified period of time, usually one year. Future vacancies may be filled from the Eligibility List on a City-wide basis.

Does Human Resources conduct the selection interviews?
Typically, the Human Resources Office is not involved in the final selection interviews. The City’s objective is to hire the best person for the position. The Human Resources Office recruits, screens, and tests applicants based upon requirements for the position in order to create a pool of eligible candidates for consideration. The Hiring Department reviews this pool of eligible candidates, evaluates each candidate’s qualifications for the particular job, and selects the candidate.

I don’t have a driver’s license. Can I still apply for a position?
Yes. However, many positions require that you provide a valid California Driver’s license by date of appointment. Check the Job Flyer for specific license requirements.

I have a criminal record. Can I still apply for a position?
For most positions, having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you from the selection process.

Are parking citations moving violations?

The Department of Police Services is responsible for the enforcement of laws related to parking within the City of Santa Fe Springs. Parking citations list the violation and the fine amount. Parking citations are not moving violations and will not reflect on a drivers DMV record. Citations are issued to the registered owner of the parked vehicles.

Be sure to read the instructions printed on the front and back of the citation. Certain violations require proof of correction. The Police Services Center front desk is able to verify proof of correction for "fix-it-tickets" for a cost of $16.00.

Where do I send the fee for my parking citation?

Payment may be made by mail and no further action is required. Place a check or money order made payable to Santa Fe Springs Parking Administration for the amount indicated and mail in the provided envelope to:

                   Santa Fe Springs Parking Administration

                   P.O. Box 25120

                   Santa Ana, CA 92799-5120

Do not send cash. Be sure to write your citation number on your check or money order. Failure to respond to this notice within twenty-one (21) days will result in a penalty increase and/or a DMV registration hold. The registered owner is responsible for paying the parking fine.

Violators wishing to contest a citation must follow the following procedure.  Fill out an appeals form provided by the Police Services Center.  Please include any evidence or photographs that may be helpful to the Review Officer. Any items sent to the department will not be returned. All parking citation review requests must be post marked within 21 days of the violation. The Police Department will not review any citations after 21 days of issuance. A written response will be sent to you within 10 days.

If the citation involves any violations relating to disabled person parking, please be sure to include the following information with your review. A copy of the disabled persons placard, a copy of the handicap placard registration, a copy of the registered owner’s identification card, and a narrative from the disabled person as to the circumstances related to the violation.  The Department will not review any citation in person, or over the telephone.

I’ve lost my citation. What should I do?

If you need to retrieve information about a citation, such as the citation number, address to send payment, or to check status of a citation that has been paid, you can reach the Santa Fe Springs Parking Administration by calling (800) 273-6488. The Parking Administration phone number is an automated system and should provide you with selections on ways to assist with your particular needs. You will need to give them your first and last name or the license plate number of the vehicle. This will assist them in locating your citation information.

Personnel at the Police Services Center do not have access to information about parking citations.

What if I paid the citation but the DMV shows that it is still pending and won’t register my vehicle?
There are several things that can cause this situation.

The first is that the original citation payment was made after the maximum 21-day period and therefore increased due to additional penalties. The partial payment of the increased amount would have been received, but the citation would still be referred to DMV for collection because of the balance due. In this case, the total amount is still due to the DMV. It is advisable to pay the total fine amount to DMV so that the vehicle registration won’t be delayed, causing additional fees. The original payment can then be refunded if proof of that payment can be provided. The second possibility for this to occur is that an error was made when posting the original payment and it was not credited to the correct citation. If you have proof of payment for a citation that the DMV is showing due on the vehicles registration, contact the Santa Fe Springs Parking Administration at 1 (800) 273-6488. What is "identity theft?"

Identity theft involved acquiring key pieces of someone’s identifying information, such as name, address, date of birth, social security number and mother’s maiden name, in order to impersonate them. This information enables the identity thief to commit numerous forms of fraud which include, but are not limited to, taking over the victim’s financial accounts, opening new bank accounts, purchasing automobiles, applying for loans, credit cards and social security benefits, renting apartments and establishing service with utility and phone companies.

Identity Theft is covered under California Penal Code section 530.5:Unauthorized Use of Personal Identifying Information (a) Every person who willfully obtains personal identifying information, as defined in sub-division (b), of another person without the authorization of that person, and uses that information for any unlawful purpose, including to obtain, or attempt to obtain, credit, goods, services, or medical information in the name of the other person without the consent of that person is guilty of a public offense.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is defined as abuse committed against members of the same family, a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant, former cohabitant, a person with whom the offender has had a child, or is having or has had dating or engagement relationship regardless of sexual orientation or between children and elderly parents.

Domestic violence may begin with angry words, a shove, or a slap, and escalate into a pattern of assaultive controlling behaviors including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks against the victim, children, property, and/or pets.

How can you tell if you are in an abusive relationship?

Does the person you love:
Intimidate you, make you feel isolated or alone?
Frighten you with his/her temper?
"Track" all of your time?
Constantly accuse you of being unfaithful?
Discourage your relationships with family and friends?
Prevent you from working or attending group meetings or school?
Criticize you for little things such as your cooking or appearance?
Anger easily when drinking alcohol or taking drugs?
Control all the finances and force you to account in detail for what you spend?
Humiliate or degrade you in front of others by name-calling, putdowns, or accusations?
Make frequent threats to withhold money, have an affair, or take away the children?
Use, or threaten to use, a weapon against you?
Threaten to hurt you or the children?
Force you to engage in sex against your will?

Do you…
give in because you are afraid of your partner’s reaction?
apologize to yourself or others for your partner’s behavior when they are treated badly?
experience a pattern of violence?

If you answered "yes" to even a few of these questions, it’s time to get out. There are no easy answers, but there are things you can do to protect yourself. The most important step is not ignoring the problem. Call the Police Services Center at (562) 409-1850 to inform Police Services staff that you have been a victim or know someone who is being victimized.

The 9-1-1 emergency dispatch system is designed to save valuable seconds.  When you dial 9-1-1, the system identifies the police or fire unit closest to your location and responds that unit.  Fire stations are not equipped with the emergency dispatch system so calling the station directly actually wastes response time.

What is the City’s policy for removing trees?
The City’s urban forest is very important to the environment and the aesthetics to our community.  Some quick facts about the importance of trees from the International Society of Arboriculture are as follows.

- Trees keep our air supply fresh by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.

- Trees provide shade and shelter, reducing yearly heating and cooling costs by 2.1 billion dollars.

- Trees lower air temperature by evaporating water in their leaves.

- Trees cut down noise pollution by acting as sound barriers.

- Trees located along streets act as a glare and reflection control.

Trees are very important to our community, therefore the City has a strict policy for the protection of City trees and their removal.  In order for a tree to be removed it must meet certain criteria, such as it must be diseased, dying, dead, dangerous, or damaged beyond restoration.

What is the Rapid Notify program?
The City of Santa Fe Springs with the assistance of the Southeast Regional Community Awareness & Emergency Response (CAER) Association has added the Rapid Notify Program to its arsenal of tools to deal with an emergency or disaster situation. CAER is a chemical industry initiative to improve local emergency response planning by combining business emergency plans with the plans of local government for an integrated community emergency response plan. The Rapid Notify Program provides a unique telecommunications service to assist the residents and businesses of Santa Fe Springs by providing vital emergency information via telephone, internet or pager during and following an emergency.

How It Works

If there were a significant or threatening situation in the area of your home or business, City emergency officials would activate the American Emergency Network. Within seconds of the initial activiation time businesses and residents would begin receiving phone calls from the American Emergency Network relaying vital emergency inforamtion such as:

"This is an emergency message from the City of Santa Fe Springs..."
"...there has been an accident involving hazardous materials near your home. Please follow these steps..."
"...there is a child missing in your neighborhood. He/She was last seen..."
"...proceed to the High School where a bus will pick you up..."
"...please tune to your local emergency broadcast station immediately for details..."

These examples show some of the types of emergency situations that this Network is designed to deal with.

For more information, please Police Services at (562) 409-1850 or use our Online Service Request system.

How do I get my dog a pet license?
All Dogs must be licensed yearly. Licenses are available at the Police Services Center, 11576 Telegraph Road, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The process for licensing your pet(s) is:

• You must show proof of current rabies vaccination (vaccinations must be valid through the entire licensing period July 1 to June 30).
• The cost of licensing your pet is $44.00 if your dog is not spayed or neutered.
• If your dog is in fact spayed or neutered, a sterility certificate is required for the reduced price of $22.
• If your dog is spayed or neutered and you are a senior citizen the cost is $7.00.
• If your dog license has not been renewed by September 30, you will be in violation and incur the risk of receiving a citation.

The Santa Fe Springs City Council approved the reimbursement program for "senior citizens" 62 years or older, who have had their dogs altered. The maximum compensation for this program is $30.00. Funds are limited for this program, and the reimbursements are distributed on a "first come, first served basis."
